— Experience meets expertise

A proper saddle fitting is an essential link between the horse and rider.

A properly fitting saddle is important for a horse's comfort and performance. A well-fitting saddle distributes the rider's weight evenly across the horse's back, which prevents pressure points and discomfort, and allows the horse to move freely. A saddle that's too tight can cause pain and discomfort by putting pressure on the horse's spine, while a saddle that's too loose can cause the horse to be unbalanced and strain its muscles. In extreme cases, a poorly fitting saddle can permanently damage the horse's spine.

What are the signs of poor saddle fit?

If a saddle does not fit a horse properly, pain, performance issues, and behavior problems can result. Signs of saddle fitting problems include, but are not limited to:

  • obvious sores

  • white hairs under the saddle

  • swelling under the saddle

  • sensitivity to palpation or grooming of the saddle area

  • “cold backed”

  • resistance to work

  • tail swishing

  • not traveling straight

  • general bad attitude

  • difficulty with collection

  • and many other subtle performance issues.
